Unigram UWP (Telegram) gets barrage of UI tweaks and fixes

Published by at

A month go, I rounded up all the changes for Unigram UWP (the unofficial Telegram client for Windows 10 Mobile) - but it's had another barrage of updates since then, so I thought I'd do another catch-up. Unigram UWP is really rather impressive and the feature updates are still coming apace.

Here's what's new (for v3.7.2309) since my last Flow spot:

  • Search for Stickers. Scroll up in the sticker panel and use the new search field to quickly locate your sticker sets or discover new ones, enjoy improved GIF search.
  • Delete any message on both ends in any private chat, anytime.
  • Swipe to reply/forward using your laptop touchpad.
  • Swipe up while recording for hands-free mode
  • Use Ctrl+R to quickly record a message, Ctrl+D to cancel it (for devices with attached keyboard)
  • Play video files and listen to music without waiting for them to fully download
  • Custom themes - you can now install and share custom themes, as well as create them in the new Theme Editor in Settings/Appearance
  • A new way to display the chat list (enabled in Settings)
  • Forward messages as copy
  • Added a lot of tiny animations

Now, some of these only work as advertised on a PC, i.e. not with Windows 10 Mobile - for various reasons, including media players being different. But still worth noting, and many people are using Unigram UWP on a Windows PC anyway, so...

Long press to see message options, including 'Delete', both locally and remotely; (right) swipe on a message to forward it, as shown here...

Press and hold the microphone to record a voice message, which gets transmitted immediately. The 'swipe up' feature doesn't seem to work on Mobile. yet; (right) playing a video from a chat. Again, the 'without waiting' bit doesn't seem to apply to Mobile yet, but hey, at least playback works well.

Continuing the theme (see what I did there?), 'Create new theme' is on the '...' menu but doesn't do anything yet on Mobile. It'll come in the next update, I'm sure - it's classed as 'beta' right now; (right) a choice of two chat summary layouts, here in Settings.

See the Store entry for Unigram X UWP. It's a free download.

Do you use Telegram? Do you rail against people dismissing it as 'just one more messenger'? It does look immensely capable, but the real question is how many of your friends and family you can convince to use it, surely?
