Phonly provides free client for Feedly RSS service

Published by at

Feedly, a RSS reading service, has proved to be one of the most popular replacements for the departed Google Reader, so the arrival, in the Windows Phone Store, of Phonly, a free third party client for accessing the service, is a welcome development.

The app has been created by Swedish developer Daniel Berg with an emphasis on creating an easy to use and visually attractive reading experience, a crucial element for any feed consumption app, but there's also good support for Windows Phone specific features such as the ability to pin any feed or category to the Start screen (shows latest headline and associated image) and support for lockscreen integration.

Also notable is the support for third party services such as Pocket and Instapaper, which makes it easy to save a story for later reading. That's something that especially important on a phone where the nature of feed consumption can be very different to a desktop PC or laptop.

There are now a number of Windows Phone apps supported the Feedly service. The commercial NextGen Reader remains the pick of the bunch thanks to its depth of features and customisable user interface, but Phonly is a good option for those looking for a free alternative, or for those that prefer an image heavy feed display layout.

Windows Phone Store description:

Phonly is a simple Feedly App. Feedly is free, but uses ads in category, feed and article view. Go ad-free by upgrading to Phonly Pro.

Phonly is a free download from the Windows Phone Store. The app is ad-supported, but you can upgrade via an in-app payment to an ad free experience (£1.49).
