Microsoft BLINK camera lens adds face detection and triggering

Published by at

You may remember Microsoft's own attempt at a burst mode camera lens, BLINK, last covered in June? It's fair to say that, for Nokia handsets at least, it has been overshadowed by Nokia's own Smart Cam modules (now integrated into Nokia Camera, of course). But BLINK hasn't been abandoned and here's v2.2, with intelligent triggering based on face detection, software stabilisation and GIF export.

BLINK and Nokia's Smart Cam software are subtly different in scope, of course, with BLINK becoming more and more focussed on creating shared stop frame 'animations', e.g. via Microsoft's own BLINK.so.cl server. Check it out for an idea of what people are doing with BLINK.

Here's the changelog from BLINK v2.0 to v2.2:

  • Stay focused all the time – the app automatically triggers the focus based on face detection and phone motion.
  • Better stabilization – improved image alignment keeps your BLINK sequences free from jitter and shake.
  • Export GIFs to share via Skydrive – export your favorite BLINKs as animated GIFs to Skydrive. Look for the option in the share menu.
  • Metadata – now your pictures saved to camera roll will have the timestamp and location information in the image EXIF properties.

You can download Microsoft BLINK for free from the Windows Phone Store.

With Nokia's Smart Cam burst mode software available on every Lumia device, it's tough to see much of a compelling need for BLINK - the Nokia implementation is far more polished and capable of real world burst action effects that can be jaw dropping.
