Amazon Mobile app adds support for UK and Germany

Amazon Mobile, an app that makes it really easy to buy products from etailer Amazon, has been updated to version 1.8, adding support for the UK and Germany. Products from both Amazon's own extensive product database and third party retailers using the Amazon Marketplace can be ordered using the app.

The app supports the key Amazon shopping experiences including product search, wish lists, and recommendations. Every product has its own pivot, with pages that align with the Amazon website: overview (thumbnail and summary information), details (product information and specifications), reviews (consumer comments and ratings) and new and used (listings from third party sellers).

As you find the products you want to order you add them to your virtual basket and once, you've finished shopping, you can complete your order by checking out. Alternatively you can turn on one-click ordering for Amazon's signature instant shopping experience.

An alternative to the text based search is to use the apps barcode scanning feature. It uses your smartphone's camera to "scan" a barcode, returning a list of matching results. The bar code scanning functionality is similar to Windows Phone built in Bing Vision feature, but, because the app is able to draw on Amazon's vast product database, there's a better chance of getting a matching search result.

You can, optionally, add a secondary Live Tile to your start screen to act as a deep link to the bar code functionality. This makes it really easy to look up prices when shopping on the high street (or when admiring the packaging of your friends latest gadget).

The app can also be used to manage your Amazon account. You can modify or cancel active orders, get tracking information on orders out for delivery, and see your complete order history.

Amazon Mobile is a good example of how a native client app can provide a superior experience a mobile site. That's mainly thank to a user experience that combines the best of Metro with the familiarity of Amazon, but adds a number of features and a level of performance that it's just not possible to match in the mobile browser.

Marketplace description:

The Amazon Mobile App allows Windows Phone users to quickly search, compare prices, read reviews, share products with friends and make purchases on Amazon using a simple, yet elegant, interface. To make on-the-go shopping and price comparison even easier, the Amazon Mobile App includes helpful shopping features that allow users to scan a barcode or type a search to quickly compare prices and check availability. Users may also save time by pinning the Amazon barcode scan tile to their Start screen, enabling them to simply tap the tile to take them straight to the barcode scanner.

Amazon Mobile can be downloaded from the Windows Phone Marketplace for free. It is available in the US, the UK and Germany.
