Cuteplayer app enables direct side loading of videos

Published by at

Cuteplayer is an alternative video playback app for Windows Phone that aims to make it easier for users to watch videos side loaded (transferred) from a  PC. The app also provides a full video viewing experience, with an enhanced player, support for video playlists, and a Metro styled video listing.

Cuteplayer does not integrate with the built in video library. It's worth noting that this means it can't be used to view videos recorded on the device, or copied onto the device via the Zune desktop client.

Instead you must install the Cuteplayer Connector software on your PC, which allows the Cuteplayer app to communicate with your PC, over either a USB or WiFi connection, and directly transfer videos to its own internal video library. The advantage of this direct transfer method is that videos are not transcoded by the Zune desktop client, thereby significantly reducing the amount of time required to copy a video and avoiding the quality degradation issues inherent in any transcoding process.

Videos copied directly to Cuteplayer do still need to be in a format and resolution supported by Windows Phone, but these requirements are less stringent that the Zune desktop client transcoding process might suggest, especially for the second generation devices (using the Qualcomm 8x50 and 8x55 processors). For example, it is possible to playback M-PEG-4 Part 2 (Basic profile) encoded videos at resolutions up to 720p (1280x720p).

As you might expect there is a caveat to side loading video using Cuteplayer Connector. Videos transferred in this way can only be viewed and played using the Cuteplayer app. This is due to a limitation in the way the Windows Phone platform handles files.

Other notable features of the Cuteplayer app include support for video playlists, support for landscape or portrait video playback, the ability to remember the playback location of an interrupted video (useful if a call comes in, or if you run out of battery), and the ability to pin video to the Start Screen for instant access.

Cuteplayer isn't for everyone, but if you have a collection of existing videos on your PC that you want to watch on your Windows Phone device, and want to avoid Zune's automatic transcoding, then it is well worth a look.
