Rovio announce simultaneous Angry Birds Star Wars 2 multiplatform release date

Normally I'd skip over a 'there's an app coming out on date 'X' story, but Rovio's announcement of Angry Birds Star Wars 2 on Windows Phone is important. The double-franchise title comes out on September 19th on Microsoft's mobile platform... but it also comes out for iOS and Android on the same day.

Since the launch of Windows Phone 8, a number of major names have come to Windows Phone (such as Temple Run), but almost all of the big names have come to those handsets after their release on the other smartphone platforms. The one exception would be Gravity Guy 2, which was given a short period of exclusivity on Windows Phone before iOS and Android users could download the title.

That's not the case here, Rovio have made the call to go for a simultaneous release, with no biasing towards any of the platforms in terms of release dates. The only difference in the versions is with Android, which has an additional ad-supported version - which I suspect is down to a significant block of Android users who prefer for 'free to play' versions on their handset.

The Rovio team writes:

Angry Birds Star Wars II will feature bird and pig versions of over 30 characters from the Star Wars universe. And in a countdown to the app launch, we’ll be introducing you to all of them! The first set of character reveal gameplay videos are already coming next Monday August 26th. The game will be out on September 19th all around the world, and it will be available as an universal app on iOS, Android (Google Play and Amazon) and Windows Phone 8 for $0.99 (or local equivalent)! There will also be a free ad-supported version available on Google Play.

We'll give Angry Birds Star Wars 2 an announcement and full review when it arrives in the middle of the month - with the chance to play the pigs or the birds, and use telepods to bring in physical figurines into that game. Until then you can enjoy the promo, with Emperor Palpatine inviting you to 'The Pork Side'

You can read the blog post announcing the title over on Rovio's website now, and expect a slew of viral videos, single images, and other marekting media to start flowing freely until the release on September 19th.
