Facebook Beta now available for 256MB WP7 handsets

Following its availability for Windows Phone 7.8 devices at the end of August, Microsoft has updated the Facebook Beta client to also run on WP7 devices with 256MB of RAM.

This opens up the Facebook Beta to owners with the Nokia Lumia 510 and Lumia 610 handsets, as well as addressing a number of bugs from the previous release of the beta.

The beta program gives users a chance to work with the latest version of the social network client, albeit their may be some instability or errors in the code (which you are asked to report back to the developers to help improve the product).

Here's how we described the Facebook Beta when it was first released for Windows Phone 8 in late April:

Microsoft has announced a beta program for the Windows Phone 8 Facebook app, which it says will help "speed up delivery of new features in the official Facebook app for Windows Phone", and is looking for "sharp-eyed, energetic volunteers to download a beta version of our next release and tell us how to make it better". The first beta version, which is being made available along the current release version, offers a major redesign and includes several new features.

With much of the Windows Phone market share being driven by the lower end handsets, it's good to see the lower spec not being forgotten about - Lumia 510 and Lumia 610 owners with a two year contract do not want to be left behind from the essential apps with more than a year to go on any potential contracts.

Facebook Beta is a free download from the Windows Phone Store. To download this app you will need to follow a direct link, it is not visible in a standard Windows Phone Store search (or you scan the QR code on this page).

Microsoft's intention is that the Facebook Beta app will eventually replace the standard Facebook app.
