The Guardian's take on smartphone cameras

Published by at

Self-confessed Instagram and iPhone fan Dan Rubin has been shot comparing the iPhone 5S against three other smartphone cameras, the Nokia Lumia 1020, running Windows Phone, of course, the Sony Xperia Z1 and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. Although he freely admits that he only really wants an iPhone at the end of the day, he does praise the Lumia 1020 as the best non-iPhone(!), talking up its industrial design, the quality of the photos and the ease of use of the phone overall and the camera software in particular. The video is embedded below, see what you think.

Dan does a decent enough job comparing the basics of each smartphone camera, looking at:

  • Dynamic range
  • Colour and detail
  • Zoom and OIS
  • Low light shots

Notable is that he only looks at the photos on the phone screens though - there's no detailed analysis at all. Also, although he covers the Nokia's PureView zoom quite well, plus its OIS, he fails to mention the Xenon flash in the 1020 and in the S4 Zoom. Probably because the [cough] iPhone only has LED flash [cough]. Shooting people in low light is the Achilles heel of every smartphone camera in the world that doesn't have Xenon.

But enough notes from me, see Dan's video below:
