Sony brings back 3.5mm jack and ZEISS lenses, adds Qi charging

As you know, I do like to keep my eyes on the wider smartphone field, especially with a view to replacing a Lumia (etc) - and Sony just announced something that ticks an awful lot of boxes. Not least ZEISS lenses coming back to flagships again (I know, I know, the 'new' Nokia had some too), not least Sony having 'courage' to bring back the much loved 3.5mm headphone jack in the face of industry 'trends', not least the company embracing Qi wireless charging, a staple on Lumias for the last eight years.

Xperia 1 II

Sony's new Xperia 1 II ('mark two') has

  • 'sub-6' 5G
  • 6.5" OLED display at 4K resolution (3840 x 1644 pixels) and HDR
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset with 8GB of RAM
  • 256 GB of storage
  • a 4000 mAh battery
  • USB-PD fast charging
  • NFC, Bluetooth 5.1
  • Qi wireless charging
  • a 3.5mm audio jack
  • Zeiss optics, with triple 12MP rear cameras — standard (f/1.7), wide and telephoto, Auto-focus is 'up to 60 times per second)
  • IP68 waterproofing

Which is quite a spec loadout, though do note the launch price is (wait for it) an INSANE £1100 in the UK, inc VAT.

Quite aside from the stupidly confusing "1 II" name, the price will effectively prevent any SIM-free sales, leaving just a few premium contracts to take up the slack. This may be you, in which case you'll do well, but the price needs to be in the £700 range for this to really have a chance.
