Cardboard to digital with ScanBizCards

Getting the information on business card into a digital form can be a tedious chore. ScanBizCard aims to solve this problem by making scanning business cards as painless as possible. The app also makes it easy to use the data obtained in a number of ways.

ScanBizCard's core functionality is to scan a card and add its data to the People hub. However, the idea of the app is that you'll also keep a database of scanned business card separately too; think of it as the digital equivalent of a business card binder. To that end the app helps you take the best possible photo of a business card and includes tools to crop captured images.

Once a card has been captured, it is processed (scanned) and stored in ScanBizCard's own database. Once this is done the information obtained can be edited (inevitably there will sometimes be the odd mistake) in a side-by-side screen.

With the data obtained and edited it can be added to the People Hub (address book), with optional notes and assignment to a new or existing contact groups. There are also options to send a quick intro email and a one touch function to send a LinkedIn invitation.

ScanBizCard also includes integration with a cloud service (WebSync) that backs up and syncs any business cards scanned to the cloud. This means cards and their associated data are accessible from other devices and any web browser, but also make it very easy to keep your scanned card collection when you move to a new device (there are iOS and Android version of the app too).

With its additional functionality the app can be considered the Rolls Royce of the business card scanning app category. ScanBizCards can be downloaded from the Windows Phone Marketplace; a free trial is available and the full app costs £5.49 / €6.99 / $6.49 (which includes a years subscription to the WebSync service).

Business card scanning is a relatively speciflised niche. It's also possible to you you smartphone for more generic document and receipt scanning. If that's what you are looking for you may like try handyscan (review) or Digi-scan.
