Review: Dragon Portals
10tons have released Dragon Portals for Windows Phone, their take on the Match Three game. And, with a little bit of smart thinking and graphics, have created a game that genuinely delivers a fresh view on the genre.

Fresh from my pinball adventures in Dr Pickaxe, I headed into Monster Pinball HD on an adrenaline high. It's fair to say that I found tables aplenty, effects aplenty and always something interesting happening - yet somehow there wasn't the same sense of satisfying physicality in this alien-filled pinball extravaganza. Classifying this game as 'disappointing' would be doing it a disservice - Monster Pinball HD just didn't grab me as a great pinball title would have done.
When I first reviewed Farm Frenzy on Windows Phone, I found that the XBox Live title was very addictive, but it seemed to be missing a little something that kept me coming back. Well, six months later, on a whim I downloaded the app again, and it hooked me. Once I had burned through the levels, I was looking for more. And while it's not an XBox Live title, the 'sidequel' 'Pizza Party' is available as a standalone title in the Windows Store.
Anyone who has paid any attention to mobile games in the last few years will know about the Zuma genre of games. Thanks to the licencing deal with EA, Nokia can bring the franchise to Xbox Live with no compromises. Accept no limitations, this is the frustrating, fast, and fun, real deal.
Scottish developers Cobra have built up a tower defense style game that does everything you would expect of a game in this genre, but does it with enough style and good looks that it feels a genuinely new experience. Initially released in January with some bugs and issues, the Nokia exclusive is back in the Windows Store with a bit more polish, but is it enough?
Flow Cube is a logical puzzle game, with no timers, bonuses, or levelling up getting in the way. All you have to do is join up the coloured dots on the playing field. But unlike your common garden puzzle game, this game takes place in three dimensions...
It's Angry Birds, on Windows Phone 8, it's the version of the game called 'Seasons' and it does everything that you would expect of an Angry Birds game. Recommended. Next- (Oi! - Rafe) Oh I need to write some more? Okay then, let's look at what makes Seasons probably the best of the Angry Birds games available.
Hexter is a great little strategy game for your Windows Phone. Based on capturing enemy pieces to either wipe them out or, more likely, end the game with the most territory, Hexter is fast moving, quick to play, and requires a significant amount of concentration while playing. That's probably why I like it.
Nokia have continued to show strong support for the Xbox Live brand, and it was nice to see Microsoft follow that with today's release of the classic Angry Birds Seasons. The Nokia-released Bejeweled Live Plus is another classic, and I've been drawn into the gem matching game once more over the last twenty four hours.
Jump Wheel is not a brand new game genre. While it mixes in a bit of a platform game, it still has most of its roots in the single key jumping game where the lead character cannot stop running. But with some smart level design and industrial graphics, Jump Wheel is a great time-waster of a game.
