Surface Duo specifications underwhelm?

icon

The trouble with launching a flagship smartphone a full year before availability (in this case, for reasons of encouraging developers to write for a new form factor) is that the specs can end up being a bit... underwhelming. And while I'm certainly not a benchmark obsessive, there are some spec points which - if true - will be very disappointing. Specifically, in term of imaging, battery, and Google Pay compatibility.

Microsoft announces Surface Go 2 - tasty, but expensive when configured

icon

A few days late with this (sorry, normal service is now resumed), and yes, we know it's not a phone, but Microsoft announced the Surface Go 2 this week, online of course, with no physical meet in these COVID-19 times. We covered the original GO extensively over the last 24 months, but the Go 2 has smaller bezels, faster internals, better microphones, and a redesigned hinge. See the announcement text, design and sizzle videos below. The Go is a fabulous companion to a Windows 10 Mobile or (now) Android smartphone (thanks to 'Your Phone').

Windows 10 Mobile receives its VERY last OS update (Jan 2020)

icon

After a month's reprieve(!), Windows 10 Mobile really does receive today its very last OS/security update, marking the end of Microsoft's official support, though of course phones aren't going to suddenly stop working. Under the hood here there are kernel and security fixes, for all phones currently running the '1709' branch (potentially most of you, see the upgrade/hack links below). Grab this last (January 2020) update in Settings. Make the most of it, it's the last time you'll ever be seeing those cogs*.

Microsoft's Surface refreshes, plus the Surface Neo and Surface Duo (phone)!

icon

At an event in New York today, Microsoft launched some new mobile hardware and a tease of what's around the corner (and definitely coming, this time!) See below for details, but there's a genuine mobile highlight in a brand new communicator, the Surface Duo, rivalling the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, but without using fragile folding plastic screens.

The F(x)tec Pro1 now up for pre-order

icon

Back in March, I looked at the first hands-on videos with the F(x)tec Pro1 prototype, inspired by the classic slide and tilt mechanisms from the Nokia E7 (and N97 and N950), with full QWERTY functions hidden beneath a large touchscreen. Fast forward six months and the Pro1 is now a reality, with the company putting it up for pre-order, with hands-on videos of the 'final' hardware. A review handset is coming to AAS/AAWP in the next few weeks, but I thought a quick round-up was needed in the meantime.

The NexDock 2 (Continuum) lapdock is now six weeks away

icon

You'll have spotted that I've been keeping a close eye on the NexDock 2, a Continuum-compatible (hopefully) lapdock that should work with the Lumia 950, Elite x3 and IDOL 4 Pro from the Windows 10 Mobile world. Plus, of course, Samsung flagships in the Android world, which have a fully realised Desktop (DeX) mode. (Huawei too.) Anyway, I have it from the horse's mouth that all ordered NexDock 2 units will be shipped by the end of next month. I may even get a chance to review one sooner... watch this space.
